Thumbs Up/Down

Periodically, the Enterprise comments on recent developments or issues in the county. Pros and cons on topics that make a difference on the Leelanau Peninsula are given a thumbs up or thumbs down.

Here’s how we see it: It’s good to see the public involvement this election cycle. From the voluminous letters to the editor to participation in any of the League of Women Voters’ candidate forums, readers and residents care about the communities in which they live and aren’t afraid of making their position known. Good to see voter engagement and a capacity crowd at the Oct. 1 Cherry Pie Debate.

Between roadside signs and political advertisements, we’ve worn out our television mute button and look forward to a time when we see the roadside rather than election signs.

Hats off to groups who organized Leelanau UnCaged as well as the Lake Leelanau Community Association and the Empire Area Heritage Museum who are hosting season-ending events this weekend.

This means that holidays (winter) is on the horizon.

Leelanau Christian Neighbors recently purchased a house located at the corner of M-204 and Co. Rd. 641, a strategic acquisition aimed at mitigating the affordable housing crisis in Leelanau County. LCN will work with HomeStretch, non-profit housing corporation, to manage the property, safeguarding it as an affordable housing option.

Much more work needs to be done to bring “affordable” housing to fruition on the peninsula where the average home sale in August was $1.1 million.

September was the third warmest on record in Traverse City, according to the National Weather Service. The temp soared to 91 degrees Sept. 15 and 16, extending the summer well beyond Labor Day.

All good things must come to an end. The fall colors will soon peak, bringing us closer to the black, white and gray of winter.
