Gregory “Greg” V. Shugart, 75, of Cedar passed away at his residence on October 5, 2024.

He was born and raised in Traverse City and graduated from TC Senior High School in 1967. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from Michigan State University in 1971. Greg developed a love for the building industry at an early age working for his father at Shugart Builders. Greg became manager of Shugart Builders when he was in his late twenties and purchased the family business from his father in 1985. He successfully ran the wellknown business for over 30 years before retiring. His retirement didn’t last long; always on the move, he swiftly launched a smaller company specializing in remodeling to continue his passion for building. He belonged to Cedar Hill Toppers, Cedar Rod and Gun Club and was a life member of the Elks. Greg held positions on the board including President of the Home Builders Association of Grand Traverse Area and served on the Board of Directors for Michigan Construction Industry Mutual for over 30 years.

He was a loyal, hardworking, loving man that touched all who had the pleasure to know him. He especially loved all things outdoors, including hunting, fishing and golf. He had a passion for dogs and tinkering with anything in his barn. He loved getting together with his high school buddies and was not shy to harass them about their political leanings. He enjoyed playing card games with his family and made sure everyone knew when he won.

Greg married the love of his life, Cookie Shugart on July 22, 1983. They lived in their dream home, custom built by Greg, on the top of a hill in Cedar. They traveled, played and lived their best life together. They regularly attended St. Rita’s Catholic Church.

He is predeceased by his parents Vern and Trudy Shugart. He is survived by his wife Cookie; 3 children Grant Johnston of CT, Jason Shugart of OH and Missey (Scott) Swan of TC; 4 grandchildren Max, Lila, Bjorn and Bryna; brother Gary Shugart and sister Marcia Servis.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Tunnel to Towers (t2t.org); an organization close to Greg’s heart that provides housing for injured veterans or to St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Greg’s name (8707 Hill Street, Maple City, MI 49664). Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home from 5 to 7 pm.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 16 2024 at 2 pm, with visitation beginning one hour prior, also at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
