Leelanau Twp. OKs communications tower agreement with county

Leelanau Township unanimously approved an updated intergovernmental agreement for construction of the Leelanau Township communication tower project at its regular meeting on Oct. 8. The agreement is contingent upon approval by the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners, which also reviewed the document and gave approval of the changes at its regular session last week Tuesday.

The agreement establishes the communication tower’s purpose and financial obligations in regards to the use and annual maintenance of the tower itself. The terms of the agreement states that it will continue for 20 years “from the date of the final installation of the tower or until terminated by either party…” If construction of the tower is not commenced within two years of the commencement date, the agreement will be automatically terminated unless extended by written agreement between both parties.

“... Working with the county manager, Richard Lewis, there are now two important safeguards for the township investment. One, completion of construction within two years, and two, receiving both a special land use permit and a building permit,” said Leelanau Township Supervisor Mike McMillan. “Both points ensure that the process is followed by the owners of the tower (the county) and the township follows through on their commitments.”
