No blow fall

To the editor:

I want to promote a “NO BLOWFALL”. Fallenleaves provide a protective blanket for your gardens which will, over time, turn into mulch. More importantly, dead leaves provide shelter for insects and “creepy crawlies” that provide absolutely essential food for migrating birds and their nestlings. Your seed feeders and syrup feeders may attract birds, but they cannot provide enough protein. Put away your blower and gently rake your leaves onto your garden beds and under your shrubs. Minimize your yard cleanup, too. The birds and insects will thank you. A No Blow Fall will be far more effective than a “No Mow May”, which brings dubious results—the spread of nonnative weeds that do not benefit the local ecology.
