In a heartbreaking loss, Leland boys soccer (18-3-1) fell in the regional final 2-0 against Western Michigan Christian at Cadillac High School Thursday.
Any player would admit that Leland’s goal was to win a state championship, and anything less than that would have been a disappointment.
“This is the best team we’ve ever had and the deepest team we’ve had. It’s too bad, but (Leland) went out there and gave it everything they had for 80 minutes and outplayed WMC,” Leland coach Rob Sirrine said.
The Comets had 17 shots compared to five from WMC. Leland had plenty of opportunities but couldn’t find the back of the net.
WMC got on the board late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break. With roughly 25 minutes left in the second half, WMC scored its second goal of the contest off a set kick.
The Comets never stopped fighting as several attempts to find the back of the net nearly missed.
The Comets beat WMC 3-1 in one of the season’s first games at home in September.
“The last five seconds of the game, we were trying to get a goal, and that’s all we asked them. Just never quit,” Sirrine said.
Leland advanced to the regional final after defeating Tawas 8-0 in the regional semifinal last Monday.
