Eagles fall to Huskies

Cold third quarter shooting provided Benzie (1-2) an edge over Lake Leelanau St. Mary (3-1) in a 45-42 loss on Tuesday.

“The girls played hard and had tough defense,” St. Mary coach Clint Couturier said.

St. Mary went into halftime up 28-26, but the Eagles only managed to score five points in the third quarter compared to the Huskies 10.

St. Mary junior Kyla Barnowski managed a doubledouble with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while seniors Della Bunek chipped in 11 and added five rebounds. Leah Fleis scored 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

The Eagles take a detour Saturday to the Upper Peninsula to battle Cedarville/DeTour co-op team.

On Friday, St. Mary flew all over the court in a 65-10 win over Central Lake, then won 57-41 against Brimley on Saturday.

Barnowski was unstoppable as she scored 21 points against Central Lake; 26 points against Brimley to lead the Eagles.

Stats against Central Lake: Fleis, 13 points, 5 rebounds; Muriel Korson 11 points; and Delana Kirt, 8 points, 10 rebounds.

Stats against Brimley: Kirt 12 points, 9 rebounds; Fleis 8 points.

ELKS DOWN LAKERS

Elk Rapids gave Glen Lake its first loss since last season with a 49-39 win over the Lakers.

“We just keep on working to get better every game,” Glen Lake coach Brad Fosmore said.

Despite the loss, Laker senior Eleanor Valkner played her best game of the season with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Lydia Fosmore added 7 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists; Jessie Pugh 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals; Elodia Peplinski 6 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists.

SUTTONS BAY EARNS FIRST WIN OF SEASON

The Norse captured its first win of the season 40-28 over TCBAA. Anna Porter had 10 points, Lauren Lint 9 points, Brooke Wilson 7 points, Abby Hursh and Keeley TwoCrow both had six points.
