To the editor:
Sleeping Bear Naturally sincerely thanks the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB) for their essential role in Superintendent Scott Tucker’s decision to pause all work on Segment 9 of the Heritage Trail indefinitely. Because of GTB’s strong commitment to the natural world, these rare wetlands, mature forests and steep dunes will remain intact.
Sleeping Bear Naturally commends Superintendent Tucker on his decision to pause the project after hearing the GTB’s concerns. In accordance with National Park Service policy, he recognized the Tribes’ status as a sovereign nation and took their concerns seriously.
We especially thank all the Sleeping Bear Naturally supporters who helped to preserve this special wilderness by bringing the issue to the public over the past several years.
Thanks to all, the Good Harbor wilderness will remain untouched and peaceful, with its towering trees, wetlands, dunes and all its flora and fauna existing naturally as they always have.
