The Leland boys basketball season is approaching fast as the Comets hit the hardwood for the 2024-25 season with a fresh mindset and ready-to-improve mentality.

The Comets will be hoping to improve from four wins a season ago.

Leland seniors Ryan Grinage, Evan Keen, and Colby Connor will be leading the charge for the Comets this season.

“I’m excited to play as a senior. I’ve been waiting for this for 4 years. It’s gonna be fun,” Grinage said. “We just gotta work on chemistry because we got a lot of new guys coming up to varsity.”

Keen is another player hoping for improvement and has a goal of making it further in the playoff s. But right now, The Comets are focused on getting better day-by-day and week-by-week.

“I just wanna keep improving. Over the past 4 years, we’ve been improving, so just keep it going. I’d like to make it further in the playoffs this week… Just being prepared for our first game, with everything,” Keen said.

The Comets will start their season against Grand Traverse Academy, Wednesday, Dec. 4 before facing Brethren Friday, Dec. 6 and Suttons Bay Friday, Dec. 13.

“Being an older player on the court, I feel I have more control and I’ll be not as intimidated by other players and more experience,” Connor said. “We have a real emphasis on defense this year.”

Leland coach Ryan DeFour will be at the helm for his the second season.

The Comets finished 4-18 last season and didn’t win a game in the Northwest Conference. With another year of experience, Leland is prepared to remain competitive throughout the season with proven seniors and several underclassmen who have yet to make a splash.

The Comets will look for great matches against Suttons Bay, Glen Lake and St. Mary.
