MAPLE CITY – Kevin Scott Nemitz, 63, of Maple City, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at Munson Medical Center.

Kevin was born September 7, 1961, in Detroit the son of Norman and Ruth (Edwards) Nemitz. When Kevin was in grade school, he spent time in the summers working on his grandfather’s farm near Harbor Beach, learning farming and mechanic skills. When he was a teenager, his parents purchased land in Maple City to build a home- and Kevin and his brother Randy helped the builder with construction.

Kevin graduated in 1978 from Glen Lake High School. After graduation, he and several friends worked at the Frigid Food processing plant which led to working in the cherry orchards shaking cherries and pruning trees. After working several other odd jobs, Kevin decided to serve our nation by enlisting into the U.S Navy. He served from February 1985 to February 1989, sailing primarily with the Atlantic Fleet as an engine room mechanic. While in the Navy, he visited Germany, Norway, and Japan, among other places. He decided not to re-enlist after four years and was honorably discharged with several medals and honors for his professional achievements. He served in the Naval Reserves for several additional years.

Kevin then began working for Creative Concrete, creating and installing many marvelous mini golf courses in the eastern half of the country. In recent years, he occasionally worked with his best friend Mark in their family landscaping business.

When Kevin wasn’t working, he stayed busy helping his father on their family farm- bailing hay, tending cattle, and fixing whatever needed fixing. Kevin was blessed with a green thumb-he planted many trees on the farm, tended their fruit trees, and always maintained a large vegetable garden. He loved to bake, cook, and preserve his harvests, though he wasn’t so fond of the kitchen clean-up duties afterwards!

Kevin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards with friends. He was clever with a dry sense of humor- always having a witty remark at the ready. His sister always said that Kevin had the biggest heart and would give you anything he could if you needed it.

Kevin is survived by his parents, Norman and Ruth; a brother, Randy Nemitz, a brother-in-law, Bill McNeil.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Carol McNeil, and sister-in-law, Lynette Nemitz.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 22nd at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 23rd with visitation starting at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Good Harbor.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 2943 S. Manitou Trail, Cedar, MI 49621.
