To the editor:
I’m like other weary residents of Leelanau County. That is, ecstatic that the election is over.
I can’t say exactly why so many people in Leelanau take their politics so seriously, but often the reason is closely related to their love for this place. I’m with you. We share pride in our peninsula.
I want to thank residents of District No. 5 with entrusting me as your next county commissioner. I pledge to work hard for the future of Leelanau — to maintain, protect and preserve our best parts, and to better those that can be improved.
I ran as a fiscal conservative and that’s what I’ll be. We may not always agree, but we always need to talk, to be open about what’s on our minds, and to not be reluctant to express our thoughts. Open communication leads to open government, then to better decisions.
While a story published last week said that Campbell had “congratulated himself” for the election result — a self-centered statement — I have talked to many people in attendance and they all assure I did not utter those words. I did, indeed, pay tribute to all people, including candidates, who participated in the election process. Their efforts are a reflection of how much people care about Leelanau County.
