Suttons Bay girls basketball is preparing to make its run in the 2024 season with a wide range of players from freshman to senior that will be expected to contribute.

The Norse will be led by Mariah Kalchik in her third year coaching the program. Suttons Bay will be introducing a younger cast of girls as a new generation moves into the program.

“I’m really excited about this new group. They came in and the first couple of days they just showed up immediately,” Kalchik said. “They want to learn. They want to play hard. I’m super optimistic this year. I’m really excited to have this group … The girls that are coming up know that standard already. I’m more confident in myself, and I feel even more optimistic this year than I have in the past.”

The mix of freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors are working on building chemistry.

The Norse start its season Tuesday, Dec. 5 with Grand Traverse Academy. Suttons Bay will have to replace production from graduating seniors Lauren Lint and Keely TwoCrow. Leland defeated Suttons Bay in a district semifinal 46-22 last season.

Suttons Bay senior Brooke Wilson is leading the charge.

“What really excites me (about the sport of basketball) is getting to know my team and getting to know the plays and shooting the ball and seeing that go in the basket,” Wilson said.

Wilson says the team is working on its playbook and getting ready for the start of the basketball season with techniques with dribbling skills.

As a senior now, she knows she has to be a leader on the court.

Wilson said. “Leading the team in a way of listening to what they want and what they need to play and feel comfortable.”
