Lake Leelanau St. Mary (1-0) started its season with a gritty 33-15 win against Benzie Central (0-1) Monday.
Six Eagles converted baskets in the low-scoring affair.
“We were all super excited to go out there and play. We knew that Benzie was a good team from last year, but we didn’t really know what they had back this year … We thought we moved the ball. We couldn’t make a shot but that’s what happened at the beginning of the season, but overall, I think we did pretty good and we played with intensity,” St. Mary senior Kyla Barnowski said.
Barnowski led the team with eight points, followed by senior Jessica Grant’s sharpshooting for seven points.
St. Mary junior Mackenzie Schaub had six points along with Lydia Bramer, while Muriel Korson had two points.
Benzie’s highest scorer, Amaya Roper, had six points.
“We came out with a lot of energy and considering we didn’t have school … We came out with a lot of energy and I think it was a good game overall. It wasn’t the cleanest but we put our hearts into it and when there was a loose ball we went for it,” Mikowski said.
The Eagles will be hoping to improve today when they take on Suttons Bay at 7 p.m.
Suttons Bay will be playing in their first game of the season after having their game against Grand Traverse Academy cancelled Tuesday.
“ I thought we played a lot better than I thought we were going to play, which is nice and it was a good team to play and I’m just glad we got them on schedule,” Bramer said and Mikowski added, “I’d like to see us have the same good intensity and work on our defense and tighten that up a little more. We’re playing more man-to-man.”
