The Glen Lake boys bowling team is ready to make the most of the 2024-25 season with a young team and a new home.
Local bowlers will have a change of scenery this season as Lucky Jack’s in Traverse City closed. Bowlers will now compete at Incredible Mo’s in Grawn.
Incredible Mo’s is a 3,500 square foot entertainment center with bowling, a restaurant, escape rooms, arcade, laser tag, and more.
Glen Lake will host a boys varsity and junior varsity team. The Lakers will sport no girls team this year unlike in years past due to participation.
“We are working off of what we had from last year and some of them will be in their third year… We should be doing pretty good in the long run,” Glen Lake coach Rhojo Crick said.
Glen Lake will have eight juniors, one sophomore and a few freshmen.
The Lakers started its season off with a bakers tournament Saturday against seven teams and finished third overall. Glen Lake will compete in another tournament Saturday in Cadillac.
The goal for the boys is to make it states after falling short last year.
“My goal is that we put our best food forward … I would like to see a team make it through regionals to states, but if we can qualify in the top half of regionals that’s going to be a good place to be knowing that they’re all going to come back next year,” Crick said.
Laker individuals will be battling for a state tournament spot as well.
Glen Lake junior Tanner Crick is coming off an impressive sophomore year and with big expectations coming into this season. Crick finished just outside the cut for the state meet.
“All of us are returning bowlers, so we’re ahead of the game compared to where we were last time,” Tanner said. “(States) is that experience at the next level that we all need,” Crick said.
Glen Lake juniors Oliver McDonough and Brody Switzer are also ready to compete against northern Michigan’s best. Switzer finished 33rd at the regional tournament last year.
“I have a good feeling about this season. We have a great team over here. We’ve just been getting better over the years and we’ve been able to grow with each other over last year, we didn’t want to lose anybody ... This year we are going to be even stronger than last year,” Switzer said and McDonough added. “We’ve grown over the years and we’ve gotten better. We are going to do pretty good this year.”
One of the favorite aspect for Glen Lake bowlers is the chance to develop a team.
“During those bus drives (to practices, games) this team is bonding while hanging out with each other. Bowling is pretty laid back compared to other sports so it’s a good time hanging out with your friends and making memories,” Tanner said.
