After scoring four points in the first quarter, Glen Lake girls basketball (2-1) flipped the switch and went on to defeat Elk Rapids 49-32 Tuesday.
The Lakers went down 8-4 at the end of the first quarter after a sluggish start.
“We are trying to find our way offensively, luckily our defense is playing well and that really kept us in the first quarter,” Glen Lake girls basketball coach Brad Fosmore said. “After that, we got it rolling, which was nice to see.”
Every Laker contributed to the gritty team win.
Glen Lake sophomore Lydia Fosmore led the Lakers with 13 points, followed by senior Jessie Pugh with 12 points, and freshman Elena Ottenbacher with 10 points.
Glen Lake is a young team with only one senior, two juniors, seven sophomores, and two freshmen.
They will have to grow up fast if they expect to be competitive in a tough Northwest Conference (NWC).
Glen Lake will travel to Benzie Thursday for the first NWC girls basketball game.
“We have to keep improving every day. We are trying to keep working and keep getting better,” Fosmore said.
Glen Lake defeated TC St. Francis Friday 44-21 in a tournament hosted by Elk Rapids.
Glen Lake girls fall to Onekama
The Lakers had another great defensive effort before battling conference foe Onekama in another tournament game.
The Portagers defeated Glen Lake 57-42 Saturday as Onekama lit up the scoreboard.
Glen Lake and Onekama will play two more times in the regular season. The Northwest Conference is shaping up to be competitive at the top with a handful of teams.
“You are going to have to come to play every night in the Northwest Conference,” Fosmore said.
