Leelanau prep sports were back in action this week after winter weather caused mass cancellations. Schools will be monitoring the current winter weather system with hopes that most of the games will still be played.

Lake Leelanau St. Mary (2-0) put on a defensive showcase to defeat Leland (1-1) 36-18 on a snowy Tuesday night.

“It was an excellent defensive effort by everyone on the team. We came in, we shut down the paint. We caused a lot of havoc,” St. Mary coach Jim Bunek said. “Offensively we’re still working on some things, but we knocked down enough shots to get the win. ”

Both teams struggled to find the net in the first half, but the Eagles eventually pulled away.

St. Mary held Leland to four points in the first half of the sluggish game.

The Eagles were led by Luke Bramer with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and five steals.

“As a team, I think we did pretty well offensively taking care of the ball. We didn’t have many turnovers. I think we did extremely well, which was great for us, but I’m hoping that defensively we can keep it going towards the end of the season.

Offensively, we can work harder and get better shots off and get more points up,” Bramer said.

St. Mary saw contributions from Oliver Mitchell with nine points and six rebounds; Cody Couturier 5 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals; James Bunek 5 points, Will Krusel 5 points, Avery Bunek 3 points, and Josh Bunek 3 points.

Leland junior Eli Ulbrich led the Comets with six points, followed by Brady Keen with three points.

Four other Eagles scored baskets including Ravello Smith, Bok Molter, Liam Waskiewicz, and Adrian Spencer.

The Eagles will play four games this week starting by traveling to Mesick yesterday, Friday hosting TC Christian and Saturday hosting a tournament against Cedarville.

“We will have to improve shot selection and moving the ball and taking care of the ball … Mentality,” James Bunek said.

The Eagles earned their first win of the season Friday with a 57-48 win over Gaylord St. Mary.

Bramers had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists led the way. St. Mary junior Cody Couturier had 12 points, 2 rebounds; James Bunek 12 points, 5 assists, 1 steal.

“Great team defensive effort,” James Bunek said.

Leland earned its first win of the season on Friday as well with a 45-41 win over Brethren. Molter had 18 points, Smith 11 rebounds, and Ulbrich put on a dominant defensive performance.

The Comets host Suttons Bay Friday.
