The Northport Public School Board of Education (BOE) voted unanimously to appoint Jamie Scripps to fill the trustee position opened by the resignation of Barbara Conley, whose term ends Dec. 31.
In total, four candidates interviewed for the empty seat at the BOE’s regular meeting on Dec. 9, including Scripps, Laura Cavendish, John Wadas, and Sara Later. The board had candidates introduce themselves, explain why they’re interested in serving, as well as take questions. BOE members each had their own ballots to select who they were interested in nominating, and board president Ben Purdy read aloud the board member’s name and who they chose. With the majority of votes for Scripps, the board then made a motion to approve of her new role.
Northport Superintendent Neil Wetherbee said both himself and the board were excited about the four candidates interested in the position, adding that it’s “a pretty rare thing these days to have that many high quality candidates volunteering for any role in the community.”
