‘Embarrassment … in history’

To the editor:

At an unexpected moment a motion was made and supported by four of our newly elected county commissioners to kill the Leelanau County Energy Futures Task Force. There is no question they had the authority to do so.

However, they can’t so easily sweep away the climate catastrophe we’re all headed for — and the fact that the adoption of clean energy has the potential to be a major part of the solution.

People residing in Leelanau know that housing and their cost of living will be high. Why do they come? For the quality of our environment, and the quality of life it affords — our pristine air, land and waters.

Support for clean energy is an investment in our future, both locally and globally. Our citizens understand this. Surveys conducted over many years show overwhelming support for clean energy and its benefits.

These leaders were elected to protect our beloved Leelanau. Their decision to kill the EFTF can be compared to burying their heads in the sand while the catastrophe continues above. This is a sad day for Leelanau, one that will be remembered as an embarrassment in our history.
