‘Proactive … good’

To the editor:

Last week I noticed a couple of stories that were encouraging dealing with plans to address Leelanau County challenges. Action sometimes is slow to address needed changes. We forget how fast change comes and are late in responding. With change can come resistance, but delay can sometimes be much worse in the end. I speak of the inconvenience of the the M22/72 roundabout in Elmwood Township and the efforts to rebuild the seawall on the Leland River. At the moment I’m looking at planning trips to Traverse City and figuring out the snowball effects of various traffic options impacts on diverted traffic. A short term pain for more efficient trips in the future. The failure of the seawall has a more dire impact on Leland and lake traffic Geography doesn’t allow for any options, and future repairs could be much more costly. Addressing the problem sooner than later is certainly in the best interests of all those concerned. Residents may not like short term disruption or cost, but later will appreciate the final result. Being proactive in these cases is good for the county. I thought the topic may make for a good Enterprise editorial.
