GLEN LAKE BOWLING

Glen Lake sophomore Annabelle Roach enters her second year of bowling with the Lakers, competing as the only girl on the boys’ team.

An ace softball pitcher, Roach is poised to excel on the lanes with precision and accuracy.

“It is another sport for me that is getting my arms stronger for softball; that was my main thing. They also needed an extra bowler last year, but I just ended up liking the sport and wanting to continue it. Even though I’m on the boys’ team this year, it’s still fun,” Roach said. “We are pretty lucky to be able to bowl, especially at Glen Lake.”

Roach’s goal for the season is to qualify for regionals as an individual girl.

Glen Lake sophomore Tanner Crick leads the charge for the Lakers boys’ team in 2023-2024.

Crick aims to control his approach and achieve greater consistency in his sophomore campaign than during his freshman year.

“I threw it pretty fast last season. This year, I’ve worked on slowing down a bit and improving my approach for consistency,” he said.

The Lakers are a young team with no seniors. Crick is expected to step into a leadership role for the Lakers to succeed.

“We only have two juniors on the team. I’ve had to step into more of a leadership role this year because we had so many seniors. That’s been different,” Crick noted. As the season progresses, Crick believes the Lakers will need to maintain an average score of 150 to be successful. On his favorite aspect of bowling, Crick shares, “It’s a great pastime; you can do it regardless of the weather since it’s indoors. Plus, it’s a fun way to spend a couple of hours and sometimes enjoy some food.”

Glen Lake junior Isaac Halloway is another Laker looking to improve daily, thanks to coaching guidance and a focus on one throw at a time.

“I don’t see it as a competition; I simply focus on the game. I’m not worried about others behind me,” Halloway said.

Glen Lake freshman Darien Boots is enthusiastic about competing in his inaugural bowling season.

“This is my first time, so I’m aiming for consistency. That’s my primary focus right now,” Boots commented.

Glen Lake coach Rhojo Crick is optimistic about the young team’s potential, stating, “A lot of learning and growth is going on and that’s why it is exciting to have a younger team and kids stick around in high school,” coach Crick said.

In a conference meet at Lucky Jack’s, Glen Lake lost to Elk Rapids 1,444 to 1,419. Varsity Lakers Isaac Halloway led with scores of 195 and 124, followed by Tanner Crick (170, 170), Brody Switzer (133, 92), Annabelle Roach (120, 108), and Reilly Kienne (120, 187).

JV Stats: Glen Lake 680, Elk Rapids 676.

The Lakers will kick off the new year with their first game against TC Christian on Saturday, January 6, at 11:15 a.m.
