Leland girls basketball continues to lead the Northwest Conference as local teams enter the final stage of the regular season.
The Comets had a pair of wins over Brethren and Mesick over the last week.
“In our game versus Mesick, we had great contributions from everyone on the team, and I was very encouraged with how many great opportunities we were able to create on both sides of the court throughout this game, but at the same time, it was a great opportunity for our team to learn some important lessons on what areas we still might need to improve on that will help us as we get into the home stretch of the season,” Leland coach Ryan Knudsen said.
The Comets defeated Leland 38-13 Monday and played Suttons Bay yesterday as of press time.

“With tough back-to-back Northwest Conference games this week, it made for a challenging week, but I was very proud of our effort and perseverance against two very tough opponents with having very little time as a team to prepare due to all of the cancellations last week,” Knudsen said.

The Lakers had three players score double-digits: Lydia Fosmore scored 15 points and 13 rebounds, Grace Noonan scored 15 points, and Jessie Pugh scored 10 points and four steals. Glen Lake guard Alayna Ottenbacher had 10 rebounds and five assists, Laila Shimek had nine points, and Avery Flores had seven points.
Benzie was led by Grace Heiges, who scored 12 points; Hannah Bott scored 11 points; Maddy Swander scored 6 points.
The Lakers had a primetime matchup yesterday as of press time at Onekama.
Onekama defeated Suttons Bay last week 66-19.
Brooke Wilson led the Norse with 10 points and 3 rebounds; Keke Williams had 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. *** Lake Leelanau St. Mary girls basketball (9-4) handle Grand Traverse Academy 48-17.
Eakgle senior Kyla Barnowski was dominant with 15 points, followed by Muriel Korson 7 points, Mackenzie Schaub 6 points, and Cathryn Mikowski 6 points.
