Lakers beat Comets; Norse earn second win

Glen Lake girls basketball (8-11, 5-7 Northwest)) defeated Leland Friday 41-39 to snap a three-game losing streak.

Glen Lake fell behind by seven points in the fourth quarter and battled their way back for the win.

The Lakers used its vaunted press to create offensive opportunities and outscored Leland 15-6.

“We needed to get over the hump. We’ve got so many close games this year, and it was just good to have a close game and come out on top,” Glen Lake coach Brad Fosmore said. “We’ve done well defensively all year but our offenses haven’t caught up, that’s been kind of the challenging thing for us, but it’s getting better we are starting to hit some shots and playing a little more aggressive offensively.”

The goal for Glen Lake throughout the season has been to improve with every game. “It would be nice to keep getting some wins and go into the tournament with some momentum,” Fosmore said.

Jessie Pugh led the Lakers with 17 points, and six steals; Avery Flores, 8 points, 12 rebounds; Lydia Fosmore, 8 points, eight rebounds; Alayna Ottenbacher, 5 points, three assists.

Leland senior Elli Miller had 18 points, six rebounds, and four rebounds in the loss. Comet senior Ella Knudsen had 7 points, four rebounds, and four assists; Addi Waskiewicz had 6 and 5 rebounds; Ariah Amin had 6 and 4 rebounds.

“This past week, with injuries and illness, we had to overcome some challenges, and even though the outcome of those games was not what we would have hoped, I was very impressed with the effort and execution of our team in both games,” Leland coach Ryan Knudsen said.

Glen Lake avenged a doubleovertime loss to the Comets in January.

The Lakers turned around and defeated Benzie 41-34. Pugh led again with 16 points, seven steals; Fosmore 8 points, nine rebounds; Laila Shimek 7 points, six rebounds; Avery Flores 8 rebounds.

Glen Lake hosts Buckley Friday, and the Comets host Benzie Friday.
