I started writing this little ditty in October 1997 thanks to Grace Dickinson who asked me to take over from her mother who had written the Glen Lake Area News for years, in fact started it. And I can honestly say it has been fun and interesting. Much has changed in the Glen Arbor and Empire area since then, some good and some not so good. For those of you that have been around and read the Glen Lake Area News and get original copies over the years you know that there are somethings I say tongue-in-cheek, even quotes from historical leaders etc, which are censored from being printed. Everyone that knows me, knows I am a super patriot and I make no apologies for that.
This was Chili Fest weekend and the perch fishing contest sponsored by the Sportsman Shop, yes that’s right it still there, and it was very successful and well attended with 77 entries.
There were 20 chili contestants and to be very honest with you I don’t remember who won. The important thing is everyone had a great time, there were great chilies to taste and the music as always was perfect. The rumor is that this is the last Chili Fest to be held at Boonedocks. I think this is the 24th annual chili cookoff and all of them have been fun. Dotti and I were in the first or second one and our entry was “Dairy Bar Chili.” We won honorable mention because we put chocolate covered candy in every serving as it was Valentine’s Day. The chili was okay, but the candy was great.
