To the editor:
In 2013 a request to explore the estimated costs of a drainfi eld for Sunset Shores was given by 19 out of 34 property owners to the Leland Township Board.
The board made it perfectly clear that they would not commit or spend any money on this project until there was a legal entity formed that they could then hand all project responsibilities and obligations of to. This was repeated by the board numerous times over the years at meetings.
This January 2025 meeting, when I asked the treasurer, “you remember this commitment to not spend any township money on this, right?” She nodded and replied yes with the supervisor next to her.
Why is this important? Because they were spending money on this project years ago without ever sending out or receiving any current majority consensus for approval to do so. They and previous boards started digging a hold that was now going to embarrass them.
The detailed expenditures were never shared with owners and did not become available to the owners on Sunset Shores until February 2025. Only a vague and unverifiable cost e stimate was disclosed at the beginning of this year to those in the area. This is why they’re scrambling to get this first township’s (special assessment district) in place to force repayment of their extremely poor handling of this project.
Who wants to be forced to spend $40,000 to $60,000 plus ownership costs on something they don’t need or want?
No promised commitment kept.
