‘Girl Power’ will get it done

One year ago, Joe and I were in India celebrating the union of our daughter, Grace, with her husband, Jurick and his family.

It was unlike anything we had ever experienced; full of color and pageantry. Not to mention the wonderful people we met.

I specifically bonded with a group of women, with whom I had little to nothing in common … other than our links to the bride and groom. We formed a “sahri sisterhood” as they helped me put on the traditional Indian dress they had made for me and gussied me up with some bling. They spoke enough English that they could explain the numerous rituals that are part of a Hindu marriage.

Fond memories for us. In the past 10 days those memories were rekindled as we were reunited with Jurick’s parents in Portland, Oregon, to celebrate the birth of our granddaughter – Aditi Mae Lahiri.

She is the first grandchild for them (big deal for them as Jurick is an only child) and our fifth.

We now have enough for a basketball team — an all-girl squad. They are, listed by age: Michelle, 6; Maeve, 3 and Mara, soon to be five months; Jocelynn (Josie), 2 and then our newborn, Aditi.

GIRL POWER!

Having all four grandparents in one spot is not something we experienced with our children at home. I so enjoyed watching my “baby” – the youngest of my children – and her husband take on their new role as parents. We were also able to share some laughs with Jurick’s parents watching a video from the wedding wee a year ago.

Leaving the West Coast was not something I wanted to do. Trees were in bloom and jonquils marked many a street. Besides that, I needed some distraction in my life and now it’s back to reality.

We have always wanted to host Jurick’s parents and show them the beauty and serenity of Leelanau County.

It appears this dream will come true this summer as the new parents and the old parents will converge chez Hubbell. We have all sorts of projects left incomplete due to the extended season of the Detroit Lions.

That’s OK. We’ve got all sorts of GIRL POWER to see the projects through.
