NORTHPORT – Shelly Maureen Kelley, 44, of Northport, passed away Monday, 18 December 2023 at Munson Medical Center.

Shelly was born 22 April 1979 in Greenville, Michigan the daughter of Kenneth and Peggy (Ruiter) Hoogewind.

She was a graduate of Lowell High School and earned a Bachelor of Science (Geography) degree from Central Michigan University. On 26 May 2007 in Grattan, Michigan she married Brooks E. Kelley who survives.

Shelly loved being around people and made connections with everybody she met. She worked at the Garage Bar and Grill behind the bar, catered with friends, and Deep’s Corner Store making pizzas. Shelly was the best listener and enjoyed hearing stories of people’s daily lives and accomplishments. She once had an engineering computer job and hated it because she couldn’t talk to enough people.

Shelly also had a very mechanically wired brain. She was always acquiring old and new vacuums from others to tinker with. She would take parts from one vacuum and put them on another, then would gift these fixed vacuums to her friends. She once had enough of the Northern Michigan summer heat and made her own air conditioner from scratch. Shelly also loved cars; she had many vehicles that she would work on with her most prized being a 1967 Firebird 400 convertible. Her guilty pleasure was watching singing contests on TV.

Shelly’s favorite time of year was summer. She would take her family to the many nearby beaches. As she grew up on Murray Lake, Shelly was drawn to the water and the sunshine and loved to take her friends and family out on her boat.

Shelly was a wonderful mother and adored her two children. She was very proud of them and would tell everybody she knew. Shelly loved her family, her cats, her dog, and her many friends.

Shelly is survived by her loving husband of sixteen years, Brooks; her children, Avery and Taryn; her parents; her siblings, Christopher, Michael, and Kimberly Hoogewind; her niece Anika; her parents-in-law Melissa and Stuart Kelley; other in-laws Laura and Jeff Buell; her nephews Lucas and Samuel Buell; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives. Shelly will be loved and missed forever by all.

Cremation has taken place and private family services will be held at a later date. Please share memories and condolences with the family at www.martinson.info Arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Leelanau.
