To the editor:
The Gun Violence Archive verifies that 38,568 Americans died of gunshot wounds in 2022. Included in that grisly total are the victims of the 646 mass shootings that took place in 2022. Throughout our nation’s history we’ve seen fit to expand the rights guaranteed to us by our Constitution. With that expansion we’ve also seen fit to place guardrails around those rights. Even our most precious right, that of free speech, has guardrails. Bearing arms is a right that has been expanded but is clearly in need of guardrails. Guardrails that keep arms out of the hands of those who are unstable or who are violent. Guardrails that ensure people who bear arms do so safely and with respect for the deadly power contained in those arms. Our nation can no longer bear this level of preventible bloodshed.
