To the editor:
I just came in from turning my compost pile, one reason to be grateful for a warm first day of winter. Nosignof wormsor other insect decomposers, so they know it’s winter and are safely buried down in the earth below. It felt so good to layer the pile with a large pail of apple and potato peels from the dinner we prepared for Safe Harbor guests last Sunday and the wet maple leaves still wanting to blow around my backyard.
I have been a backyard composter my entire adult life. This past year, a group of local residents also interested in composting has created a group called CROWD - Composting, Recycling, Organic Waste Diversion. If you are interested in helping Leelanau County divert yard and kitchen waste from our landfill, preventing the production of methane gas and producing a rich soil amendment, join us at our next meeting on Monday, January 15 from 1:00-3:00 pm in the Community Room at the Leelanau County Government Center.
