New 4-H program coordinator hired at MSU Extension

Danny Schaub is Leelanau County’s newest 4-H program coordinator. The Michigan State University (MSU) Extension team invites the community to join them in welcoming Schaub at a meet and greet set for Friday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Government Center.

Schaub not only grew up in Leelanau County and attended Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s, but he’s also a proud 4-H and Michigan State alumnus. Schaub’s passion for agriculture and education led him to serve as the new program coordinator, and the position is something he is eager to support to enhance 4-H programming for local youth in the area.

4-H is the largest youth development organization in Michigan, and those that participate can benefit in numerous ways through any of their diverse program offerings. The kids that are involved in 4-H are not only learning skills from the clubs/classes they apply to, but they are also learning about teamwork and collaboration.

According to Michigan State University Extension, the organization that operates the 4-H Youth Development program, its estimated that more than 100,000 Michigan youth participate in 4-H every year through various activities, clubs, groups, programs and events. In 20212022, the organization reported 96,000 youth engaged in Michigan 4-H programming. During that same time period, approximately 6,800 individuals volunteered with Michigan 4-H.

Schaub’s hire as 4-H coordinator fills the role of former Leelanau County coordinator Rosali Collier, who left the position in July 2024.

“I’m looking forward to working with the different youth in the county and growing the 4-H program… not only growing the size of the current program, but also adding new and different programs that could attract different youth into the program,” Schaub said.

Schaub has a Master of Science in animal and range sciences from Montana State University and a bachelor of science in animal science from Michigan State University. His academic and professional experiences include: conducting genetic and nutritional research in livestock, teaching university courses in sheep production and sustainability within agriculture, and managing operations on his family’s lamb farm. Through these roles, he has gained expertise in animal care, sustainable agriculture, and scientific research, all of which he hopes to incorporate into his work with 4-H.

In addition, Schaub says he is passionate about mentoring young people, and has assisted students in learning about and performing scientific research and practical farm management, ensuring they develop essential skills for future careers. When not at work, Schaub said he enjoys snowboarding and exploring the outdoors. With his professional experiences in STEM and agriculture, as well as his personal interests, Schaub aims to expand current programs and create new opportunities where interest exists.

4-H opportunities are available through 4-H clubs, after school programs, and local, state, national and international events for youth ages 5-19. To join or volunteer with 4-H, go to www.canr.msu.edu/leelanau/ leelanau_county_4_h/ or email Schaub at [email protected].
