Leelanau CROWD is a nonpartisan group that is interested in driving increased composting and waste prevention in our community in support of healthy soil, water, air and people. They seek to research, educate and support Individual choices about waste management and support community scaled solutions for organic waste.
According to the EPA, in the U.S., one-third of food grown goes uneaten, wasting the resources used to grow, harvest, transport, store and process that food. The average family of four spends $1,500 per year on food that does not get eaten. When that uneaten food ends up in a landfill, it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
Food waste is responsible for 58% of landfill emissions.
