It’s Shipwreck Month at the Grand Traverse Lighthouse, located in the Leelanau State Park. Every Thursday this month, starting tonight, there is a Zoom presentation at 7 p.m. about Great Lakes shipwrecks. Tonight’s program, will be presented by Stephanie Gandulla, maritime archaeologist and the Resource Protection Coordinator for NOAA’s Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, in Alpena. Stephanie will share the Ironton’s tragic story of loss, its exciting story of discovery, and learn more about the sanctuary’s ongoing exploration of Lake Huron.
All of the programs are free, but registration is required. You can go to the Grand Traverse Lighthouse to register and for information on the rest of the month’s programs. The GT Lighthouse Museum begins its regular hours this month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so you can also plan a visit to this beautiful and historic location.
The 37th Annual Exposures Show will be held at the Northport Arts Association’s (NAA) Village Arts Building in Northport on Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26. Exposures is a collaborative project designed in 1988 to challenge Leelanau County students in grades 7-12 to express themselves through art and writing and provide a showcase for their work. Each year about 1,000 poems, stories, photographs, paintings, drawings, and sketches are submitted for review from students from every Leelanau County school. The venue for the show changes each year, and the NAA is honored to be the location this year. The opening reception in on Friday,April25from4to 6:30 p.m. and the show continues on Saturday from 11 a.m. 2 p.m.
