Suttons Bay girls soccer (2-0) is primed for another impressive spring season as the Norse battle at Leland today at 5 p.m. in one of the season’s first games.
“We got a good core back from last year. We lost a couple of players that we will miss and are gaining a couple that’ll be good for the program. Spring sports in northern Michigan are hard (weather-wise),” Suttons Bay coach Randy U’Ren said. “This team has the potential to do good things. We’ve got a strong starting lineup. We do have some inexperience in a couple of positions, and it’s going to be fun to see who can develop this year as we go on. They are a great group.
I love being with them already. Everyone gets along.”
The Norse have braved the first few weeks of practice and are finally hitting the pitch.
Suttons Bay started the season with a 7-1 victory over Cadillac Heritage Christian April 4.
Then Suttons Bay defeated Kingsley Saturday 4-0 in the season’s second game.
Madelyn Hamlin led with two goals, while Clarice Bardenhagen and Ada Wetherbee each scored a goal against the Stags.
The Norse are playing at Leland today in a conference showdown. They will then play Charlevoix on Friday and Leland again at home next Wednesday.
The girl’s soccer season goes until mid-May, when districts are slated to begin May 22.
Suttons Bay will return two players from last year’s dream team as Lake Leelanau St. Mary senior Jacqueline Hearne prepares for her final high school sports season. Suttons Bay junior Megan U’ren will also return to the pitch for the Norse, along with several other players who are looking to make this a memorable season.
Suttons Bay has three seniors Hearne, Brooke Wilson and Nayley Estrada.
“We did really good last year. The bonding was really good, so I think we’re just gonna keep that up … We have a good group of girls, and we all have different talent, and everyone just brings something to the table … We know how to play with each other after a couple of days,” Wilson said.
Being aggressive is Wilson’s favorite part of the game. For Estrada, her favorite thing about girls soccer The Suttons Bay girls soccer team is made up of students from Suttons Bay, Lake Leelanau St. Mary, and Northport.
