The 2025 Leland girl’s soccer team is ready for another year of domination on the pitch.
The Comets are off to a fast, undefeated 4-0 defensive start after defeating Buckley 3-0 Monday during the season’s first home and conference game.
Leland led the Bears 3-0 at halftime and ran away from there.
“We keep improving every day,” Leland coach Joe Burda said. “Hopefully, we continue that all through the season. They’re playing well together.
We’re passing the ball really well. They know their first touch is not great, but it’s early, cold, and the fields are not in great condition, so there are many factors to that, but we’re on a pretty good trajectory.”
The Comets were led by junior Willa Murray and Hadley Bison, each with two goals. Leland junior Addi Waskiewicz and Lily Connor also scored on a busy night.
Five of the six goals were scored off assists as Murray, Bison, Maya Hamelin, and Waskiewicz each set their teammate up.
The Comets will be led by four seniors: Elli Miller, Kally Sluiter and Emerie Burda. All play on the defensive side of the ball as the Comets youth attack offensively.
“The motivation (is what excites me). We have three or four spots up front and six or seven girls who want them. It’s nice that they can push themselves to earn some minutes. Some girls haven’t finished as often as they think they should have so far, but those goals are going come ... If we spread it around, that’s going to be tough to defend.”
Emerie Burda says the team has been focusing on touches and getting back on defense to start the season.
“We started off very strong, and then they ended up getting the ball against us, but from there, we picked it up and kind of stopped any chance after that,” Emerie said, and Miller added. “I think we just hope to make this season fun and bring everybody up and make sure we’re fixing up things and doing good through the season.”
