LEELANAU HISTORY

5 YEARS AGO April 16, 2020

The Park Service closed Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to visitors this week citing the need to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The closing, announced Tuesday afternoon, comes after about 10 days monitoring activity at specific sites in the park to determine whether visitors are observing social distancing restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. *** Clarification of the “stay at home” order issued by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer couldn’t come at a worse time for fishers who have been filling creels with spawning perch. Phone calls inundated the county Sheriff’s Office over the weekend from people seeking to verify if, in fact, they were not allowed to fish from boats with motors.

Remember when nearly everybody in Leelanau County was clamoring to get one of those little green-and-white address number signs that county officials wanted everybody to post at the end of their driveway? County commissioners this week considered an ordinance that could make them too small. *** Erosion at Christmas Cove beach in Leelanau Township has made getting to the water very dangerous — so much so that the beach was closed this week. The Christmas Cove beach area on Lake Michigan was expanded last summer through a matching grant from the state. Orange snow fencing and signs will be put up this week to keep people off the bluff, which extends out for a few feet and then suddenly drops about 10 feet to the Lake Michigan shoreline.
