Eagles sprinting to promising track season

Lake Leelanau St. Mary track and field is ready to sprint out of the blocks for its second season after the Suttons Bay track program shut down.

“I’m looking forward to spending time with the team again. It’s fun when we come together as a community. I’m really excited to throw last year. I didn’t make it to regionals or state, but I didn’t make it to state, so this year I’m hoping,” Jessica Grant said.

Grant will be looking to compete in throwing events this season. Last year, she was close to attending the States with an impressive regional showing.

For St. Mary senior Natalie Albu, she is ready to have some fun.

“I’m just excited to be with my team, hang out, have fun, and play the game,” she said.

For the boys, Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s first state qualifier in school history was last year when the 4x800-relay team finished second at regionals, with a team of Oliver Mitchell, Garrett Grant, Derek Graham, and Garrick Collins.

St. Mary senior thrower and sprinter Anthony Grant is ready to compete strongly during his senior season.

“I’m super excited to see what’s in store and what happens. We’re still a young team, establishing who we are and what we’ll set out to do.”

I’m looking forward to seeing that,” Anthony Grant said.

As the program enters its second season as a team, Grant is happy to be along for the ride.

“I was a little bit nervous as to what was gonna happen. But seeing our school kind of pick it up in the enthusiasm that came with it was quite exciting, to be quite honest; we’ll see how far we get in the future. I think it’s looking pretty bright,” Grant said.
