Lake Leelanau St. Mary and Glen Lake softball started the season with a thriller.
The two teams scored a collective 53 wins, as the Eagles edged the Lakers 30-23 in the season’s first game last Wednesday.
St. Mary was led by senior Cathryn Mikowski, Lydia Bramer, and Daisy Serrano, who scored five runs. Mikowski had four RBI with a triple, and Bramer had one triple in the win. Claire Couturier had four RBIs, and Bridget Kohler had three RBIs.
St. Mary won despite committing 11 errors, and Glen Lake out hit the Eagles 11-6.
Glen Lake senior Jessie Pugh went 4-4 with a 1.00 OBP.
Pugh hit two singles, a triple, and a home run and scored five runs. Laila Shimek had 3 RBIs, 3 hits, and scored 3 runs. Emily Bailey hit two doubles, had 2 RBIs, and scored 3 runs. Alayna Ottenbacher went 3-3 with 3 RBIs.
Laker pitcher Carlee Burdick stood firm with six strikeouts during the loss.
The Eagles then went on to defeat Rudyard before falling to Frankfort.
Mikowski earned the win by striking out 10 in six innings of work.
Bramer led from the plate (3-3, 3 R, 3B) while Mikowski knocked in two RBIs, and Aubrey Plamondon went 2-4 with four RBIs.
St. Mary softball starts 1-3 with plenty of games ahead on the schedule.
GL turned around and defeated Marion 15-12, 24-5.

“Honestly, they’ve been really embracing what we’ve been preaching about being aggressive on the base path. It’s something that we’ve been trying. We’ve been building towards it for the past couple of years,” Glen Lake coach Lauryn Pleva said. “Push the speed on the bases and take chances. Jesse Pugh has been huge in that regard for the entirety of her high school career, but she’s been such a great example.”
SB falls to TC Christian The Norse fell in the season’s first two games against TC Christian 15-0 and 21-7.
In game one, Ella Ingwersen basehit and two Stolen Bases; LilyAnn Sterzer basehit.
In the second game, Suttons Bay junior Eli Marshall had a two-run single while Bella Wilson’s base hit. Ingwersen and Elise O’Dwyer scored two runs in the loss.
