Students take stage in spring productions

Spring is in the air and that means Leelanau students are taking stage for their annual musical theatre productions.

Leland Public School students will perform a second weekend of Lionel Bart’s “Oliver!”with a performance tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Additional performances are slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday along with a 2 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $12 for adults; $10 for students.

The production is directed by Mary Newman.

On April 28 and 29 Northport’s middle school drama club is putting on “Sci-Fi Shenanigans: Five Twisted Tales of Middle School Proportions.”

The school will be held in matinee form on Monday, April 28, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the school and an evening show, April 20 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Glen Lake Community School will present “Shrek the Musical” at 7 p.m., May 1, 2 and 3. A 2 p.m. matineeisslatedfor May3.

“We added the matinee this year in response to families asking for an earlier performance so that younger children can see the shows,” said Rob Stowe, music director. “We hope that lots of families will come see the show!.”

“Shrek the Musical” has a cast of 20 middle school and high school students, ranging from 6th grade through 12th grade. These students have been working since January on this show. Senior Peyton Brown stars at Fiona the princess, while junior Miles Wright stars as Shrek. They are joined by Blake Sobeck as Donkey, Landon Scheele as Lord Farquaad, Evelyn Roeder as Pinocchio, Mackenzie Gordon as the Dragon, Willa Stewart as Gingy and the Sugar Plum Fairy, with Davanie Kemp, Salvador Pineda, Mallory Guffey, Vaughan Kukuruga, Fern Pineda, Keira Newman, Amelia Rollo, Ellie Wright, Sutton Parker, Aubrey Peplinski, Hadley Novak, Avery Petroskey, and Odin Brown on sound.

The show is a collaboration of Jeremy Evans, director; Stow, musical director; Lisa Stewart, choreographer; Kathy Lau, costumer; sound designer Maria Ulrich; Christy Case and Dorothy Vogel as rehearsal pianists, and many other parents and community members.

After a long career in Leland and Elk Rapids schools respectively, Evans and Stow are in their second year at the helm of the annual Glen Lake Schools’ musical.

“We are so excited to present this classic childhood story on the stage with such an awesome team,” Stow said. “We are grateful for the support of the administration and school board in the arts programs.”

Lake Leelanau St. Mary middle school students will present “The Legend of Robin Hood”, a comedy on Sunday, May 4.

“The kids are excited, especially for the sword fight,” director Amber Couturier said. “There’s a few surprises along the way.”

Suttons Bay Public School will perform “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” May 15, 16 and 17 — all at 7 p.m. — in the high school auditorium.
