Bumb to be honored

The Suttons Bay-Leelanau County Rotary Club will honor Charlie Bumb on Friday, May 2, in an “Evening to Remember” the Leland Lodge.

“(Bumb) is a warm and gentle gentleman,” Leelanau Christian Neighbors Director Mary Stanton said. “He’s very respectful of other people and is an amazing man. We are very fortunate to have him at LCN.”

Bumb has been LCN board president for a number of year and provide a calm and steady leadership style, according to Stanton.

“(Bumb) has brought a lot to the table,” she said.

Bumb, a Cleveland Township resident, is the 14th annual recipient of the Owen Bahle Award for Service.

The ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour, followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and an awards ceremony.

Bumb’s work experience was brilliant in sales, marketing, and general management.

From 1961 to 1973, he worked at the Indiana Bell Telephone Company and Cummins Engine Company (1973-2001).

After retiring in 2001, he moved to Cedar and became a valuable community member.

Bump, 88, was chair of SCORE (volunteer mentors to small businesses) for 17 years. He served in various leadership positions and was instrumental in growing the Traverse City chapter into one of the most active in the nation.

Bumb also contributed to the Mt. Holiday Ski and Recreation Board of Directors, the Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation Board of Directors, the Munson Healthcare Board of Directors (2018 to present), Leelanau Christian Neighbors (2018 to present), the Suttons Bay Rotary Club (2003 to 2008), and the Suttons Bay Congressional Church (2024 to present).

Bumb married Nora Bumb over 64 years ago, and they have three daughters and seven granddaughters.

Bumb graduated from Burris High School in Muncie, Indiana, and then from Indiana University.

One of Charlie Bumb’s favorite quotes comes from Hollywood actor/director Clint Eastwood, who was once asked how he stays so youthful: “I just get up every day and don’t let the old man in,” according to a December 2022 Enterprise article.

In 1979, Bumb discovered a lump under his nipple while showering.

After saying something to his wife, Nora, her judgment led him to see a doctor.

“I went to this doctor who had done hundreds of mastectomies, and I explained what I had found,” Bumb said in an October 2023 Enterprise article.

He defeated that battle along with many others throughout his life.

Tickets for the Evening to Remember are $70 per person and is available from Suttons Bay/Leelanau County Rotarian or Leelanau Enterprise office, 231-256-9827.

This Rotary fundraiser will help support local youth programs such as Inland Seas
