Crystal River project back on the calendar

The Crystal River culvert project is back on track and is projected to start in mid-June. Crossing No. 1 will happen in mid-June while the No. 2 crossing will be projected to start after Labor Day.

These are the final legs of the project that is set to replace four culverts, two of which have already been done.

The project is being managed by GTech and funded by the Conservation Resource Alliance.

“Not much disruption,” Leelanau County Road Commission Manager Brendan Mullane said.

The Leelanau County Road Commission announced that bridge and culvert projects on the Crystal River have been halted.

During the meeting, Leelanau Road Commissioner Manager Brendan Mullane announced that two culvert projects, including the well-known “shoot the tube,” are on indefinite hold after the first two out of four were completed last year.

This project has been in the works for seven or eight years.

Alpine and White Road bridges in Solon Township on the Cedar Run River are put on hold for the foreseeable future, at least a year, according to Mullane.

There has been a verbal proposal between Buntings, Solon Township, and the Road Commission for alley improvements behind Buntings market and E Bellinger Road.

“It’s a public road but we have a policy on township matching,” Mullane said.

The Road Commission is discussing policy potential for the road commission to turn certain roads back to gravel if its rated low enough on the PASER (Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating) Scale.

One of the roads that opened for discussion is Amore Road.

“First step to fixing the road is to turn it into gravel,” Mullane said .

The reason for the discussion is regarding funding of repaving some of these off the beaten path paved roads.

In other news, the Road Commission met with a developer on the Drake Property that is discussing ways to improve the intersection at Drake Court and Stony Point Road in Suttons Bay Township.

“This is very early on in discussion and only a possible solution. We requested this sketch from the developer so we can start the conversation about possible improvements here,” Mullane said.

As pothole season continues, the Road Commission team is preparing to use a better patch than the typical cold patch as the frost thaws.

Street sweeping is underway since the weather broke and work on gravel roads were delayed earlier this month until the frost has left the road base.
