Leland is off until next week when they travel to play Traverse City St. Francis at the TBAYS Soccer complex in Traverse City.

A girls soccer game between Leland (5-0, 2-0 NWC) and Suttons Bay (2-1, 0-1 NWC) was a stalemate until the 75th minute when Leland sophomore Lillian Connor received a long pass from senior goalkeeper Elli Miller.

Connor handled the pass with one touch off her knee followed by a burst of speed and a gamewinning goal that snuck past the Norse.

“We’ve had to work the whole 75 minutes to get there. I saw the defender, I saw her positioning and I just let it,” Connor said. “(The win) motivation to know that we can work the full 80 minutes strong.”

The Comets had plenty of opportunities to score more goals but couldn’t find the back of the net. Leland’s Miller turned away the few chances Suttons Bay had to earn the shutout.

“We knew we’d get one, we wanted it a lot earlier. It couldn’t have come at a more opportune time and (Connor) hit it beautifully,” Leland coach Joe Burda said.

The excellent play of Suttons Bay goal keeper Mackenzie Schaub led the way with 12 saves..

“ I was proud of how hard we played,” Suttons Bay coach Randy U’Ren said. “When it’s two good teams playing you learn that you have to not only play hard, but then you have to be able to play smart.”
