OAB announces concert series

The Old Art Building’s (OAB) historic “Big Room’ will be alive with music and drama all spring long, with several not-to-miss performances slated for the OAB main stage.

The lineup begins tonight, April 24 with an Earth Week concert with Seth Bernard. Bernard’s journey — from potent young Interlochen Center for the Arts idealist to iconic troubadour of the Great Lakes region — has been rooted in the woods and water, soil and soul of Michigan.

Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $20 to OAB members and $25 for non-members. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

On Saturday, May 10 Cousin Curtiss will take the OAB stage. The group brings a fiery dynamic, rarely seen by a solo act and partner up with the equally enigmatic and soulfully driven electric guitar prowess of Harrison B., these two road warriors on a mission to electrify audiences everywhere with their two-man full-band sound.

Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $25 to OAB members and $30 for non-members. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

“The Belle of Amherst: A One-Woman Play” will be performed, Sunday, May 18.

Bringing poetry to life, Sara Hartley performs as Emily Dickinson in Williams Luce’s classic play, making use of Dickinson’s work, diaries, and letters to recollect her encounters with the significant people in her life. Playgoers will be treated to tea or coffee along with a tasting of Emily Dickinson’s Black Cake.

Tickets for the 5 to 6:30 p.m. performance are $20 for OAB members and $25 for non-members. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.

Fast- forwarding to Wednesday, June 18, Jon Muq will take the OAB stage for a mid-week concert.

Muq, a singer-songwriter born in Uganda and now living in Austin, Texas, draw from African as well as western musical trends and traditions.

Featured on the PBS News Hour, Muq devises songs as small gifts, designed to settle into everyday life and provoke reflection and resilience.

The concert is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 for OAB members and $35 for non-members.

The final spring concert is scheduled for Saturday, June 28, with Six Mile Strings in Concert.

Visiting from Detroit, Yuri Popowcyz, Natalie Frakes, Alyca Wilder, and Tom Sullivan are a string quartet of friends who focus on performing classical and contemporary works.

This will be the ensemble’s third concert at the OAB, which they describe as offering “a unique kind of magic that brings the audience closer, both physically and emotionally.”

The concert runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $25 for OAB members; $30 for non-members.
