Spring time in Leelanau is always a special time of year.
I’m dusting off my shorts just in preparation. I can’t wait for cherry blossoms to bloom and my fingers are crossed that they stay vibrant for as long as possible (at least a few days).
I can’t wait to go for a long drive after a long drive taking in the various fruit farms that are lit up in white and pink.
Historically, the blossoms arrive around Mother’s Day, which this year is May 11.
On the peninsula, cherry and apple blossoms represent a magical time each spring. As the trees burst into a symphony of delicate pink and white blooms, the landscape transforms into a breathtaking canvas. This fleeting moment represents renewal and hope, embodying the promise of warmer days ahead. Locals and visitors alike gather to admire the blossoms, celebrating the arrival of a new season filled with possibilities. Cherry blossoms bring a sense of community, connection, and fresh beginnings for me.
I’m hoping that when my mom comes up that they will be out to celebrate Mother’s Day properly. But every day is Mother’s Day in my eyes.
Last Friday, when the Cheese Shanty in Leland opened for the first time this season I made sure to stop by and get a sub. That place always brings fond memories to me and my family and again represents warmer days ahead.
They were out of pretzel bread because they were so busy, so I will definitely have to go back and get another.
Another favorite part of spring is watching the high school seniors that I’ve covered all year end this phase in life and begin a new journey with graduation right around the corner.
High school athletes are in their final form for spring sports. I hope these seniors soak in the last few weeks because the real world is right around the corner. Make sure to share good times with your friends and teammates over the next few weeks. You will carry those memories with you for the rest of your life.
From Leland soccer to Glen Lake baseball, all local athletes are giving it their all this springtime.
We wish the seniors the best of luck as the school year wraps up.
Another highlight of my spring is hanging up the ski and snow gear and trading it for lighter clothing and brushing off my golf clubs.
I can’t wait to hit the links at these local courses. They are always a good time and tough courses to improve your game.
Recently, I played 18 holes at a decent golf course in Florida. Nothing crazy. Although I quite enjoyed the weather, there’s no place like golfing in northern Michigan.
The smell of fresh grass, losing about a dozen balls a round, and tossing the club in frustration is in my future. And I couldn’t be happier.
