Families can expect plenty of fish and even bigger smiles at the annual Scott Brow Fishing Derby held at the Northport Mill Pond on Third Street from dawn until 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The Northport Sportsman Club sponsors the annual youth fishing derby each spring, according to coordinator and local Ryan Blessing, who participated as a kid and began helping the Northport Blessing participated as a kid and then when he moved back to Northport in 2015 he started helping with the Northport Sportsman Club.
For anybody that’s into trout fishing, the last Saturday in Michigan is always kind of a special day because it’s the opening of that season and trout are sort of beholden to a lot of fishermen.
Young kids are welcome to catch trout up to 14-years-old.
The fishing derby is named after Scott Brow died in a car wreck in 1977.
The fun fishing derby has seen a transition ever since COVID, but there will still be a few prizes and items to give away, but it will be mostly showing up to catch fish.
The delivery of 400 trout commenced this week while giving the trout a couple days to acclimate to the water before kids show up and have fun with it.
All the old timers show up for the next week or so after the derby, trying their hand at fly fishing or sitting on buckets with corn, catching fish.
Trout size is bigger from years past growing from 8 to 12 inches to 12 to 15 inches.
There will be donuts provided by Barb’s Bakery along with hot dogs to enjoy in what should be a beautiful weekend.
The Northport Sportsman Club will be offering the chance to get your photo taken with newer Polaroid cameras that will print the photo on the spot.
The Northport Sportsman’s Club is actively looking for new members and sign up sheets will be available at the event.
They take donations as well. The club will be hosting a youth shooting day later in the year.
