Bay Meadow Farms trying plug experiment

For Margo Behler and Bay Nordstrom of Bay Meadow farms in Suttons Bay, spring is always the best time of year.

“We’ve been getting the ground ready since last fall, and we have everything ready to roll,” Margo said.

The family has grown on the same land for over 100 years with a focus on regenerative farming and sharing the love of flowers in northern Michigan.

The farm is located at 721 South Stony Point Road in Suttons Bay. The motherdaughter duo of flower power is testing a new experiment with “cool flowers,” including cut flower plugs—nearly 3,000 of which are located at the farm.

“They are being hand-directed onto the soil. They’re called cool flowers and love growing in the cold,” Margo said. “They really don’t like the heat, so you plant them now, and they start blooming.”

The plugs are anywhere from an inch to 2 inches tall.

Bay Meadow Farms is also doing roses. “Once we start getting these plants in, then we’ll move to the roses,” Margo said.

Bay Meadow Farms is a mainstay at the farmers market in Glen Arbor.

Bay Meadow Farms will open the farm stands around the Fourth of July. The farm is typically open Wednesday through Friday, as she sells the majority of her supply at the farmers market.
