Spring a great time for going through your belongings and sign up for one of four Household Hazardous Waste Collection schedule from May through October in the county.
The HHW collections begin with May 17 at the Leelanau County Government Center. A second will staged June 21 at Glen Lake School, 3373 W. Burdickville Rd.
On Sept. 22 a HHW collection is scheduled at the Peshabestown recycling site, just north of the casino.
And on Oct. 11, the events will conclude for the season with a collection at the Elmwood Township Park on Cherry Bend Road.
Extra pairs of eyeglasses in your drawers?
The Suttons Bay-Leelanau County Rotary Club will be collecting prescription eyeglass, readers and prescription sun glasses at all HHW sites.
Acceptable materials include: aerosols, ammunition, antifreeze, automobile transmission fluid, automobile paint, batteries (all types), brake fluid, bug sprays, car wax w/solvent, diesel fuel, dry cleaning agents, fiberglass epoxy, fire extinguishers, fluorescent light bulbs& CFLs, fungicides, gasoline, glue, herbicides, insecticides, kerosene, lighter fluid, mercury thermometers, mercury thermostats, moth balls, nail polish, oil (motor and fuel), Paint (latex or oil) with a limit of 10 gallons of latex & oil paint, paint thinner/stripped/ primer, propane tanks-no grills, pesticides, pool chemicals, rat poison, smoke detectors, turpentine, wood preservative, varnish, syringes (placed in a heavy duty container with lid), prescription and over-the-counter medications.
Unacceptable items include: large appliances, tires, mattresses, scrap metal, building material, radioactive or shock sensitive material, explosives, unlabeled/unknown wastes, home business and commercially generated waste. Two tire and mattress recycling sessions are scheduled this year. The first is scheduled on Friday, May 15 at the county government center. The second is slated for Friday, June 20 at Glen Lake Community School.
There is a limit of ten (10) tires per property with a $2 non-refundable fee per tire. Passenger tires only. No oversized tires.
Mattresses must be dry and stored indoors, off the ground. There is a $5 non-refundable fee per mattress or box spring.
