Hundreds participate in kids fish derby in Npt.

Saturday was a great day for the annual Scott Brow Kids’ Fishing Day in Northport. Several hundred kids and their parents attended the event during the course of the day. There were people from all around Leelanau County, and also from Traverse City, Frankfort, Elk Rapids, and no doubt other far flung locations. Omena was well represented there , as well. OG and Kristin DelaFuente were there with their daughters, Emma, 7, and Esme, 3. Karl Krusel came back from college in Grand Rapids to go there with friends.

Congratulations to all of the volunteers from the Northport Sportsman’s Club for their hard work on the event. The Fishing Day chairman, Ryan Blessing, said that it is a legacy event that brings the community every year. It has been going on for around forty years. It is a multigeneration event. There were many parents there who had come as kids themselves.

The event wouldn’t have been possible without the support from many. Thank you to Northport Building Supply, Dan Scott Builders, Barb’s Bakery, Jon’s Barbershop, and the Michigan DNR. Thanks to Security Sanitation for donating their services. Many thanks to the Northport Department of Public Works for making sure that everything is in good shape at the Mill Pond for the event. Special thanks to the Halley McDonald Foundation which made stocking this year’s trout possible. The trout that the event was able to procure were larger this year, which made it quite exciting for the fishers, but were also quite a bit more expensive. When Halley and his wife Kate heard about that, they stepped up to cover the difference. It has been an important part of their family for a number of years. Their grandson, Grady Price, who lives south of Suttons Bay, has a tradition of spending the night before with them. He and Halley head to the Mill Pond first thing on Saturday morning. And he caught one of those big ones this year!

Omena residents Scott and Cathy Heiser recently traveled to Tarrytown, NY to celebrate the third birthday of their granddaughter, Hazel, and to meet their new grandson, Rowan Sean Heiser, who was born February 21. Rowan is a traditional Irish name, and Sean honors Jess’ beloved grandfather who immigrated to the US from Ireland. While they were there, they attended the Broadway production of Aladdin, which is now Hazel’s new favorite. Rowan and Hazel will travel to Omena this summer, along with their parents and dog Luke, over the 4th of July holiday.

Don’t miss the Origin and Echo Exhibit at the Village Arts Building in Northport. The Opening Reception is today from 4 to 7 pm. It is a fascinating art show organized by Northport Public School’s art teacher, Jen Evans. With 117 student “Origin” works by Northport School students in grades K – 12, and 117 adult “Echo” responses, the gallery will be full of stories, connections, and surprises.

If you can’t make it to the opening, the exhibit will continue until May 11, Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 4 pm.

The Omena Breakfast Society resumes their morning gettogethers tomorrow from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Omena Historical Society Museum. All men are welcome for free coffee and pastries. The group meets each Friday during the summer. It is their 24th year.
