In response to the COVID-19 threat, Leelanau UnCaged, Northport’s popular September street festival, is caging up for 2020 and postponing until next year. Scheduled for September 26 this year, the 8th annual Leelanau UnCaged will instead unfold on September 25, 2021. “Our team of volunteers had a terrific day planned but, for the sake of safety and security, we’ll just postpone it a year, making it even better for 2021, ” said Sandy Dhuyvetter, director of Leelanau UnCaged. *** First responders can’t work at home during the coronavirus pandemic. Their job is on the front lines, in harm’s way. “My biggest concern is bringing it home to my family,” said TJ Sterzer of Cleveland Township, a newly sworn deputy with the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office. “I understand at work it’s inevitable to be in contact with the public. So we take every situation
as though people have been infected with COVID-19.”

The presumed owner of Sugar Loaf Resort is employing a new real estate agent and says that “several real offers” from potential buyers of the resort are “being evaluated.” Remo Polselli, the “managing member” of a corporation believed to own Sugar Loaf, said he is no longer working with local real estate agent John Peppler to market the long-shuttered ski resort. *** The National Park Service is making plans to clean up an old dump site near Tucker Lake that was once owned by Glen Arbor Township. Used intermittently in the last century until around the mid-1960s, the former dump is located on a four-acre parcel off Westman Road near County Road 675 (Dunns Farm Road). The property has been part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for decades.

A local fishing meeting may be arranged between representatives of local support groups and commercial fishing operations to discuss efforts by the Grand Traverse Band to negotiate a new fishing treaty. *** Architect John Dzuirman presented committee members Monday with seven different options outlining expansion of current facilities in Leland. All proposals included approximately 25,000 square feet of area, about double that of the building now.

Leland Township Zoning Board has announced that the Township Zoning Ordinance will be strictly enforced as to junk cars and other rubbish problems. At a workshop meeting held Monday, April 12, the board discussed the continuing existence of junk cars and other unsightly rubbish nuisances, and members noted enforcement has “relaxed” during winter months. *** The Leelanau County Road Commission has announced that effective Monday, May 5 there will be a short detour on M-72 between Bright Road and Co. Road 667 in Kasson Township. The detour will be a mile to the north over Bright Road, East Kasson and 667 for tome two weeks.

The Empire unit of the new five-county Community Service program is making a determined effort to secure a new doctor for the southwestern quarter of the county. To date 90 families have signed pledges to use such doctor if he opens an office in the vicinity. Local chairman John Bacon and his committee at the moment are in touch with one Detroit physician who is considering a return to Leelanau County.
*** Construction of the new $45,000 Norris School at Greilickville will begin in a few days, according to J. W. Hill, director of District Number 6. Ground already has been broken and the Harris well drilling company of Traverse City has completed a three inch well for the new building. The site also has been leveled off, in preparation for the pouring of the footings.
