Cafe VI to open May 12
These days people often refer to life before COVID (BC) and after COVID (AC).
Josh Deters, owner of the VI Grill in Suttons Bay, is returning to life BC. This month, patrons will be able to enjoy breakfast at the VI — something that went to the wayside during COVID.
Cafe VI will open, Monday, May 12, the day after Mother’s Day.
“We stopped serving breakfast in March 2020,” Deters explained. “It’s a great space (the seating area between the VI patio and tavern). We’ve only been using it for private events and banquets. And I thought it could go to a better use.”
Deters said he’s been thinking the return to a breakfast menu for years and committed to it about a year ago.
“We’re trying to establish that area of the restaurant as its own, unique entity,” Deters said. “We wanted to keep the same feel — just updated and cleaned up a bit.”
The Cafe, which seats about 60, has recently undergone a face lift of sorts. There is still the fireplace, over which a moose is hung lending itself to an UpNorth feel.
There is additional seating, with the installation of multiple booths and establishment of a community table that seats 12 people.
“The table is open to anybody. We want to encourage interaction and participation,” Deters said.
Cafe VI ‘s menu includes three omelets: a Feta, with spinach, tomato, red onion and red crema; a Good Ol’ Boy, which sausage, ham, bacon with American cheese and sausage gravy; and Fun Guy, omelet with mushroom blend, scallion and baby Swiss cheese.
There are traditional breakfast specialties, such as pancakes, waffles, biscuits and gravy as well as eggs and toast. Other specialties include a morning salad with fresh greens, strawberries, cucumber, feta cheese, hard boiled egg, cracked petter, lemon tarragon dressing with toasted sunflower seeds. There are also two bagel sandwiches — one with meat and another without — a veggie bagel. Ranchero Burritos are also on the menu and includes fluffy eggs, green chilies, onion, sausage and mixed cheeses served with hash browns.
“We offer good, fresh food (local when possible), cage free eggs, a morning salad and veggie breakfasts,” Deter said.
Coffee is a must for breakfast and Cafe VI has paired with Panther Coffee in Traverse City to offer respectfully sourced beans served up from a new coffee bar.
“They go directly to the farmers to purchase the beans for roasting,” Deters said.
The menu includes espresso, americano, latte and cappuccino; iced coffee/latte/mocha; caramel frappe; fruit smoothies; tea from Light of Day Tea; flavored cold tea and even alcoholic cocktails and breakfast beer cans.
Coffee, sandwiches and readyto- go meals will also be available for take out from the cafe.
Hours for the cafe are Friday through Tuesday from 7 to 11 a.m.
