Summer 2020 will likely go down as the summer of cancellations. Events that contribute to iconic experience of summer in Leelanau are being postponed or canceled altogether due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cancellation of Fourth of July activities, including fireworks, is on the agenda for Leland Township’s Board meeting Monday. *** The harbormasters of Leelanau County’s four municipal marinas are each facing unique challenges this season that are based on two common problems: the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and record high water levels in Lake Michigan. Exactly when the marinas will open for the season and what services they will provide boaters remain a question mark.

This weekend should be a beautiful weekend for sweet cherry blooms and the following weekend should be good for tarts. That’s according to Jim Nugent, who grows about 40 acres of both varieties in Bingham Township. “The sweets are just starting to open,” Nugent said. “They started just a little bit yesterday (Tuesday), but with the temperatures today, tomorrow and Friday they will be in full bloom by this weekend.” *** Glen Lake Superintendent Joan Groening is leaving the district at the end of the 2015-16, according to action taken by the Board of Education last week. Board president Fran Seymour said the board voted 7-0 last Thursday, after meeting behind closed doors for less than an hour, to approve the resignation/ retirement of Groening effective June 30, 2016.

Some 424 acres of prime Leelanau County farm land on Shady Lane in Bingham Township will be auctioned off on May 25 by Gus and Barb Sharnowski. *** Candidates with party affiliation have until 4 p.m. Tuesday to file nominating petitions for township and county offices. Those without part affiliation have until July 20. To date, four of five incumbent county commissioners have filed for re-election.

50 YEARS AGO May 8, 1975

A court ruling was awaited at midweek in a Leland District Court case involving an Ottawa-Chippewa Indian arrested for illegal fishing in Leelanau County with a gill net. Arrested in a stated effort to have provisions of the 1839 Treaty of Washington defined was Arthur Duhamel. 51, a resident of Peshawbestown in Leelanau County. He openly fished in violation of Michigan law on December 21 and 22 in order to bring an interpretation of the treaty to a court test. *** A topical fluoride program is scheduled this summer for children in certain school grades who drink water from private wells or from non fluoridated public water system. Sponsoring the program is tha Grand Traverse - Leelanau - Benzie District Health Department.

75 YEARS AGO May 11, 1950

Preliminary work on the $1,000,000 Air Force base at Empire got under way this week with the arrival of Gus A. Lofgren, project engineer, and Frank P. Floryan, also a civilian, attached to the Chicago office of the U.S. Engineers.

*** A windstorm, said to be the worst since the Armistice Day blow of 1940, ripped through the county Friday night and Saturday, causing thousands of dollars in damages to buildings, and robbing farms of invaluable topsoil. The storm gave plenty of warning so ships and smaller craft were off the Great Lakes.

100 YEARS AGO May 7, 1925

The Stander Motor Co. delivered to A. Brooks Wilder a new Chevrolet Coach on Monday last. *** In the Circuit Court held here last Saturday, Mr. Kurtzhals was sentenced to serve six months at Ionia for violation of the Prohibition Act. *** Mrs. Hattie Guthrie is steadily improving after a recent operation.
