‘Make your voices heard’

To the editor:

It was with great shock and dismay, that I read Suttons Bay Schools intend to sell a piece of property along Herman Road, and relocate the existing athletic fields. Even more concerning was this open property would become a housing development. I reached out to two board members for an explanation. Both desired the superintendent’s desire to “right size” the District, with the primary benefit of reducing maintenance costs.

I contacted the superintendent and he was willing to discuss my concerns. He cited the need to “right size”, reduce maintenance costs, and also went into extensive detail how the proposed housing development is needed in Leelanau County.

The net savings in maintenance costs would be minimal as this plan will only reduce one field, combining the current soccer field with the existing football field. The expenditures of thousands of dollars to relocate those fields is not a wise use of taxpayer money when those fields, fencing and structures already exist. It is not the responsibility of the District to facilitate housing. Even if those fields were relocated, retaining the property for potential future use would cost of District very little. Due to its small size, selling it will not result in a meaningful windfall. Once the property is gone, it is gone forever.

The Board should recall, selling buses and moving to public transportation did not work. Selling this property will likely result in the same regret. If you have concerns about this plan, please make your voices heard.
