Voter turnout was dismal, but those who cast ballots in Tuesday’s school election, supported the millage requests before them.
Voters approved a sinking fund millage request from the Suttons Bay Board of Education for a five-year extension of
its sinking fund millage which is seeking a five-year extension of its sinking fund millage which sits at .4718 mills. The vote was 908-467 in favor of the proposal, effective from 2026 to 2030, will generate $359,480 the first year it is collected.
“We are thankful for the continued support of our voters in Suttons Bay Public Schools,” Suttons Bay Superintendent Casey Pets said. “Our students, staff, and families deserve the
very best public education that we can put together with the available resources and the renewal of our sinking fund millage helps the district to maintain our campus, buildings, and infrastructure without significantly tapping into general fund dollars that we direct to classroom instruction.”
Also given approval was a one-year renewal of a 10.9013-mill operating mill- age for the Leland School District. The district has renewed this millage each year since the mid-1990s.
The levy is expected to generate $5,377,836 when collected later this year. Passage of the request is required for the school district to receive state funds.
“We are so grateful to our community for their continued and consistent support of our school and program,” Superintendent Stephanie Long said. “Leland Public School is able to meet the needs of our students and families because of the trust and confidence that our voters confirm each year by passing our operational millage.”
Overall turnout in the two school districts was Tuesday was 26.38%
